GENE THERAPY EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS

Created a suite of educational materials for patients considering gene therapy as a treatment for sickle cell disease (SCD) to inform and empower patients of all ages and their caregivers.

BACKGROUND

In 2023, the FDA approved two gene therapies for patients aged 12 and older with sickle cell disease (SCD). There became an immediate need to create educational resources for patients and families to comprehend the gene therapy processes used in treating sickle cell disease.

CHALLENGE

Currently, there are no educational materials that guide people with sickle cell disease through gene therapy as a potential treatment. On top of that, gene therapy is a difficult concept for children to grasp, which presents the need to develop materials that are age appropriate and informational. The materials should be suitable for different ages and relationships with sickle cell disease.

RESULTS

1.  Visualized the gene therapy process in the context of sickle cell disease, showing key differences between the information patients need  and information caregivers need.

2. Developed a system approach through pamphlets and guided workbooks to support patients with sickle cell disease and their caregivers in unique ways.

3. Created 10 functioning pamphlets and workbooks to be distributed and initially tested with CCHMC team.

This work is confidential, however I am able to share hard copies in interviews.
