COMPLETE CENTRAL LINE CARE
THE BACKGROUND
A risk of central lines is Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSI) where bacteria can enter the central line and infect the patient's bloodstream. Improper or inadequate disinfection techniques for needleless connectors is one of the most significant contributing factors to CLABSI.
CCHMC has been working diligently to decrease the frequency of CLABSI events within the hospital. This led to a partnership with The Live Well Collaborative to determine if there is a need for a new, innovative product that can be developed to ease nurse workflow and save time while providing better care.
CHALLENGE
Central line care requires a lot of disinfection in order to maintain utmost sterility when accessing the line to administer medications and collect blood for tests and labs. Currently, the products and processes that are used are cumbersome and difficult to use, which means that central line care requires more time.
The aim of this project was to research product and processes pain points through observation and simulation, ideate potential solutions that can integrate with existing processes and create early minimum viable prototypes for further manufacturing and testing with the CCHMC Frontline Innovation team.
