HOXWORTH CENTRAL SPATIAL DESIGN

Strategized and visualized the redesign for Hoxworth Central, focusing on employee productivity, donor engagement, and multifunctional spaces for independent and collaborative use.

BACKGROUND
The Hoxworth Blood Center has been facilitating blood donation for the local community since 1938, with multiple donation centers throughout Ohio and Kentucky. Hoxworth Central is the only center that collects donations, processes blood into product, and provides care for patients who need transfusion medicine.

CHALLENGE
The current atmosphere of Hoxworth Central is uninviting, cold, and empty, making it difficult to engage both donors and employees. Furthermore, the interior atrium is hard to navigate due to confusing structures and unclear hallways, dissuading donors and patients from returning.

The aim of the refreshed atrium is to create a comfortable, community-driven hub that can simultaneously act as a donor interaction area and as an employee well-being space.

RESULTS

Improved way finding throughout the central atrium by defining a provider and donor paths, defined and assigned purpose to dead spaces that were identified through observation and interviews.

Defined spatial identity and engaged all users by separating the long atrium into defined spaces for donors to rest and recover after donations, and employees to engage with coworkers, focus on work and other tasks.

Moved the registration desk and implemented kiosks for easy way finding and checking in.

Engaged the donors by creating interactive moments post donation to share involvement.

Divided the back half of the atrium into semi-private spaces for meetings, events, and calls.

Developed materials for future planning and construction, such as a video rendering of the future space, FF&E book, and a strategic roadmap that outlines ways to change the space based on constraints such as budget, time, and permanence.

This work is confidential, however I am able to share hard copies in interviews.
