GENE THERAPY EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS

Created a suite of educational materials for patients considering gene therapy as a treatment for sickle cell disease (SCD) to inform and empower patients of all ages and their caregivers.

BACKGROUND

In 2023, the FDA approved two gene therapies for patients aged 12 and older with sickle cell disease (SCD). There became an immediate need to create educational resources for patients and families to comprehend the gene therapy processes used in treating sickle cell disease.

CHALLENGE

Currently, there are no educational materials that guide people with sickle cell disease through gene therapy as a potential treatment. On top of that, gene therapy is a difficult concept for children to grasp, which presents the need to develop materials that are age appropriate and informational. The materials should be suitable for different ages and relationships with sickle cell disease.

RESULTS

Uncovered key differences in information needs for patients and caregivers through interviews and contextual inquiry. Established more nuance by separating patients into age categories to provide more appropriate information.

Developed a system of culturally sensitive materials that educate about gene therapy, and how it works as a treatment. Pamphlets work to present information in an approachable way and guide patient during the therapy.

Designed and prototyped initial materials to be distributed to patients and caregivers. Designed visual identity to be approachable, informative, and calming to introduce an unfamiliar treatment.
